Carla is a fourth year marine natural products graduate student. After
graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in marine biology from
Texas A&M University at Galveston, she moved to Oregon State University
where she began working for Dr. Gerwick. After two years, she
transferred along with the lab to Scripps Institution of Oceanography to
finish her PhD degree. Carla's work focuses on the study of ultraviolet
screening products produced by cyanobacteria. Currently, she is
interested in the signaling and biosynthesis involved in the production
of scytonemin, an ultraviolet light absorbing molecule produced by many
cyanobacteria.
