Marcelino obtained his Ph.D degree at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain under the supervision of Prof. Ricardo Riguera, working on the isolation and structural determination of new antimalarial natural products from Panamanian marine invertebrates. Since joining the Gerwick lab as a postdoctoral researcher, he has focused his investigation to the discovery of new anticancer compounds from marine cyanobacteria collected in several tropical locations. Marcelino has been an active collaborator in the Panama-based International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups program (ICBG) which goal is the discovery of new drugs against tropical diseases and the conservation of the natural resources in Panama.
