Roger is working with the Panama ICBG program. During the past two years he has been stationed at the Panamanian National Science Center (INDICASAT) where we have been pursuing the bioassay guided isolation of compounds with activity against a panel of tropical infectious diseases. As an 'outpost' member of the Gerwick group Roger been responsible for the development of a semi-independent research program that is engaged in every aspect of the drug discovery process, from field collections to structure elucidation and advanced stereochemical determination. As a part of this effort the program has grown to include other chemistry students, and currently includes three additional members. The first-rate instrumentation available at INDICASAT has allowed him to pursue his primary interest of the application of state of the art techniques in NMR and mass spectrometry to the structural determination of marine natural products, and is also providing opportunities in the arena of chemical biology in tropical parasites.
